Obstruction Removal on Runway 6 End

Lakewood Airport, NJ

Lakewood Airport is a General Aviation Airport located in Lakewood, Ocean County New Jersey. DY Consultants was responsible for the engineering design and permitting services for the removal of the obstruction on Runway 6 End approach surface restricting the night flights at Lakewood Airport. The obstructions were determined that penetrated the IAP visual portion of the final approach segment 20:1 Obstacle Identification Surface (OIS) based upon the FAA’s review of Lakewood Airport’s Instrument Approach Procedures (IAPs) for Runway 06.

The challenging portion of the project was to remove the obstructions (trees) from environmentally sensitive freshwater wetlands areas with exceptional resource values. This needed careful coordination with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to obtain a necessary environmental permit for trimming the trees below 20:1 approach surface without disturbing the wetlands areas. In addition, these trees were located off-airport property which necessitated obtaining the Right of Entry and Temporary Pruning Agreement with the property owner.

DY Consultants provided grant administration services to submit grant applications to the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to procure the funding for the obstruction removal project. In addition, DY provided the following services: Engineering Design and Bidding Documents Preparation, Coordination with the NJDEP, off-property owners, and Construction Management Services during the construction period.
